Ed Anthes-Washburn

Ed Anthes-Washburn

Executive Director, Port of New Bedford

What is your focus in IoT?

Identifying ways sensors and technology can transform traditional marine industries like commercial fishing, shipping, transportation, cargo handling and recreational boating.

How do you hope to make a difference with that focus?

IoT can be particularly disruptive in our traditional marine industries. My hope is that with these sensors and the know-how cultivated by leaders in the tech space, we will be able to quantify data that was previously consider qualitative- stories about what fishermen are seeing on the water transformed into measurable and defendable information. The concept of adding research capabilities to every fishing vessel in the Port of New Bedford could revolutionize everything from fisheries stock assessments to ocean health to weather forecasting- giving a voice (and new revenue sources) to the people that know the most about our oceans.

What is your focus in IoT?

My focus is groundwater supply monitoring.

How do you hope to make a difference with that focus?

Groundwater is a vital but stressed resource. Monitoring of groundwater supply has traditionally been a complex process, out of the price range of most private well owners and expensive even for professionals. Wellntel's information systems make groundwater visible. We are working with private well owners, rural towns, counties, state agencies, local and national conservancies, and trusts to deploy monitoring networks across the US to increase local understanding of their groundwater resources, improve resilience, and help make communities sustainable.
